The I-129F is the form that starts everything. It is the petition your fiancé(e) files in the US — and the boxes on it are where a small mistake turns into months of delay. Here is what I wish I had known before we filed ours.

What the I-129F actually is

The I-129F — officially the 'Petition for Alien Fiancé(e)' — is the form your US citizen fiancé(e) sends to USCIS to ask permission to bring you over on a K1 visa. It is the very first document in the whole journey, and it is filed entirely on the American side.

You do not sign it, and you do not mail it. Your fiancé(e) does. That is the first surprise for most couples — the person moving is not the person filing.

The boxes that trip everyone up

Most delays do not come from big mistakes. They come from small ones: a name that does not match the passport exactly, a date in the wrong format, an address from years ago. USCIS reads this form literally, so you should too.

  • Spell every name exactly as it appears on the passport — no nicknames, no missing accents.
  • Use the US date format (MM/DD/YYYY) everywhere.
  • Answer every question — write 'N/A' rather than leaving a blank.
  • Sign and date in ink, in the right place, by the petitioner only.
My experience

We almost sent our petition with a wrong spelling of my middle name. A friend caught it the night before we mailed it. That one box would have cost us weeks.

What to send with it

The I-129F does not travel alone. It goes with evidence: proof that your fiancé(e) is a US citizen, proof that you are both free to marry, and proof that you have met in person in the last two years. Missing one piece is the most common reason for a request for evidence — the famous RFE.

The filing fee changes over time, so check the current amount on the USCIS page before you write the cheque. A wrong fee is an easy, avoidable rejection.

After you file: NOA1 and the wait

A few weeks after filing, your fiancé(e) receives a receipt notice — the NOA1 — with a receipt number. That number is how you track the case, so keep it somewhere safe.

Then comes the quiet part: the wait for approval, called the NOA2. It can take many months, and the silence is normal. The timeline page explains the whole wait, step by step.

FAQ

Who files Form I-129F?

Your US citizen fiancé(e), not you. The petition is filed in the United States by the American side, before anything starts on your side.

What is the most common mistake on the I-129F?

A name or date that does not match the official documents exactly. Match your passport and birth certificate letter for letter, and use the US date format.

What happens if I make a mistake?

Usually USCIS sends a request for evidence (RFE) asking you to fix it, which delays your case. If the form is badly incomplete, it can be rejected and you start over. So double-check everything before mailing.
